MG RX5 SUV has been spied testing in India. The spotted model seems to be a left-hand drive (LHD) version of the RX5 which implies the SUV has been imported to India for testing and R&D purpose. Spy images of the heavily camouflaged MG RX5 do not reveal much, though the exposed bits indicate the spied model is the 2018 version of the MG RX5 SUV. The 2018 MG RX5 gets a host of elements such as a large V-motion grille, sleek headlamps and bracket-like LED daytime running lights that enhance its visual appeal.
The spy shots of the SUV give an inkling of the exterior which features alloy wheels and larger roof rails. At the back, it gets horizontal shaped tail-lamps with LED units, a raked windshield with rear wiper and a roof-mounted spoiler.
On the mechanical front, the international model comes with two petrol engine options including a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder unit and a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engine. With 217bhp against 350Nm, the 2.0-litre engine offers 51bhp more power than the 1.5-litre unit which makes 166bhp along with 250Nm torque. Transmission options on the SUV include a 7-speed and a six-speed automatic unit, while the all-wheel drive (AWD) is restricted to the top-spec model.
The left-hand wheel drive (LHD) model spotted in India seems to be from one of the markets where it is sold either under the MG or Roewe brands. It is expected that the India-bound model will be produced at GM’s Halol facility in Gujarat which was taken over by MG early this year.
The company had revealed its investments plans in India earlier this year which includes an initial investment of Rs 2000 crore. Moreover, the company plans to have an annual production capacity of 80,000 units to start with. The company plans to invest around Rs 5000 crores in India in the next six years.
