- MG ZS EV is MG’s first all-electric product for India.
- ZS EV is an SUV that will rival the Hyundai Kona.
- Will be priced similar to the Kona but undercut it.
- It will be sold in five metros first.
MG has announced that it will unveil the India-spec ZS electric vehicle in December. The ZS EV is an SUV that will rival the Hyundai Kona, India’s only other all-electric SUV on sale today. It is already on sale in multiple markets and is expected to launch in India in the first quarter of 2020.
The ZS EV is 4314mm long, 1809mm wide, and 1620mm high – making a smidge larger than the Hyundai Kona. It has a 150bhp electric motor and a 44.5kWh Li-ion battery pack that gives it a range of either 262 km (WLTP cycle) or 335 km (NEDC cycle).
However, it remains to be seen what this translates to in Indian driving conditions. The battery pack can charge in 40 minutes to 80 percent from zero using a 50kW DC fast charger. However, with a regular AC outlet, it will take seven hours to charge fully from zero, using a 7kW AC charger.
MG has tied up with startup eChargeBays, a Delhi-based company, to help customers of the ZS EV fit chargers at their places of residence. The ZS EV will not be manufactured here but will be assembled here. Going the CKD route will help MG keep the cost of the product down.
MG Motor India will initially sell the ZS EV only in five metro cities: Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad. It will be priced around the Rs 22 lakh mark. This should undercut the Hyundai Kona, which retails at nearly Rs 24 lakh.
