Mitsubishi eX concept unveiled in Tokyo as an electric crossover

Snapshot: Mitsubishi’s fully electric eX concept could preview the next-gen ASX crossover.

Mitsubishi has arrived at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show in Japan with a very interesting concept of a fully electric crossover that goes by the name of “eX”. It could serve as a sneak preview for the next generation ASX scheduled to go on sale next year and by the looks of it the crossover will be quite appealing as the angular styling suits the concept very well and most likely a lot of the design cues will be implemented in the road-going car as well.

Technical specifications concerning the concept are scarce at this point, but Mitsubishi has informed us the eX has been fitted with a next-gen pure electric powertrain coupled to a permanent all-wheel drive arrangement all wrapped around in a sleek body that makes use of a new interpretation for the company’s front fascia known as “Dynamic Shield”. The high-riding model also gets a double headlight arrangement with LED technology that was also used in the rear of the crossover for those taillights shaped like a boomerang.

Instead of conventional side mirrors, the Mitsubishi eX concept has cameras along with a suicide door arrangement, but none of the two features will make it to the ASX production car. In addition, the road-going model won’t get the concept’s large alloy wheels while the styling will be toned down considerably.

As for the interior cabin, the eX adopts a clean and functional layout with a fully digital instrument cluster along with a couple of more displays and touch-operated buttons that have replaced the physical controls. Although on the outside it looks quite compact, the interior cabin seems to be very spacious and easy to get into thanks to the wide door opening while those sitting on the rear seats will have plenty of legroom, but headroom is a bit limited due to the sloped roofline.

Expect the next Mitsubishi ASX to show up in March 2016 at the Geneva Motor Show and chances are later during its life cycle it will spawn a fully electric derivative. It’s too early to say whether India will get the ASX which would be slotted underneath the Pajero Sport and the Outlander which is rumored to arrive in our country in 2016.
