Mitsubishi is planning to bring 5 new models by 2016

Snapshot: Mitsubishi is planning to broaden its portfolio by 2016 with a new hatchback and sedan in India

In a leap to resurrect itself in India, the Japanese automaker Mitsubishi, apparently, is contemplating to add five new models in its portfolio by year 2016. The company has been known for its tough built quality and performance however, due to credibility gap in its sales and marketing strategies, Mitsubishi's presence has become faded in the Indian market. Presently, the Pajero Sport and Montero are the only two tri-diamond vehicles on offering in our country.

The first model that is due to get launched under new brand development strategy is the Pajero Sport Automatic which will reach to our shores by 3rd quarter of this calendar year. The next expected launch from Mitsubishi's stable is of the Mirage hatchback, to be followed by its sedan version, the Attrage. The Mirage hatchback is powered by 1.2-litre 77 BHP petrol engine that will play rivalry with likes of Grand i10 and Maruti Suzuki Ritz in the market. The Attrage is a 4.2 meter long sedan with similar powertrain as its hathcback, however, to avail the benefit of low excise tax over sub-4 meter cars, we might witness a chopped Attrage for the competitive Indian market.

Undoubtedly, Mitsubishi is an acclaimed name for its SUV cars and to continue the heritage, the company's focus will be more over the same segment. “Market-wise, emerging markets, including India, are our first priority; Product-wise, we are going to put more SUVs in such markets,” says company officials. Thus the next possibility in the horizon seems to be the re-introduction of next-generation Outlander along with a new compact-SUV in India. Initially, the new models will be brought to India via CBU route from ASEAN markets. Considering the same, the competitive pricing of new models will have to be a major challenge for Mitsubishi.
