A BMW i8 prototype was spotted undergoing some test rounds in Germany and the spyshots have been released online. The spied prototype wears a new rear engine cover, which is opaque and features prominent cooling vents, giving a clear clue that this i8 packs something unusual inside. And along with additional engine cooling, it also gets enlarged AP Racing brakes.
It clearly suggests that BMW is considering on developing a more performance enhanced version of the i8. Currently, the BMW i8 comes power packed with an electric motor that has a capacity of 7.1kWh whereas the petrol engine is 1.5-litres in capacity. The motor comes paired with a 2-speed synchro switching steptronic transmission gearbox in the front, while the twinpower turbo charging unit with the 1.5-litre petrol engine is housed at the rear end. Both the engines together can pumpout a power of 357bhp with a torque of 570Nm. The powertrain of this supercar by BMW cars in India comes mated with the 6-speed automatic transmission which delivers torque to the rear wheels resulting to a drive that’s beyond expectations.
Reports suggests that the powertrain of the 2018 i8 facelift will be capable to crank out as much as 415bhp, thanks to its 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, the electric motors that it can be tuned to deliver such power. However, it is also rumoured that the Bavarian car manufacturer is planning a performance focused version of the hybrid called as the i8S. Reportedly, it could be powered by a 2.0-litre bi-turbo four-cylinder engine or a 3.0-litre bi-turbo six-cylinder engine, along with an upgraded electric motor.
