- MG Gloster, a massive SUV could grace the Indian roads during the festive season.
- MG Motors has unveiled the MG Gloster at the Auto Expo.
- Size does matter, for this MG Gloster could be the largest MG SUV in the market.
The success of MG Hector has encouraged MG Motors to introduce a full-size SUV in the Indian market. MG Gloster, based on the Chinese Maxus D90, has been unveiled at the Auto Expo. This vehicle is the largest SUV in the MG portfolio today. It could lord over the Indian roads sometime during Diwali 2020.
Dimensions wise, the MG Gloster SUV measures more than 5m in length, thereby proving to be longer than a Toyota Land Cruiser 200. Though based on the styling of its cousin, the Maxus D90, MG has tweaked the design to suit Indian standards. The vehicle gets cosmetic changes like alterations to the chrome highlights, grille, and the wheels.
The company has tweaked MG’s standard grille design by giving it an angular appearance. Other improvements include chrome lathering on the grille, LED DRLs over the headlights, roof rails, and a big glasshouse. The rear design has the massive Gloster badge in chrome plating along with an extended tailgate and slender taillamp units. The massive 19-inch alloy wheels come equipped with 255/55 R19 Continental tyres. For the chassis, it gets a light truck-ladder frame chassis.
The massive dimensions allow for a spacious cabin with plenty of room between the three rows of seats. MG has taken great pains to ensure that the MG Gloster’s interiors are much superior to the MG Hector. The upholstery and other lining materials are on par with the top German cars in the international market.
MG Motors has not disclosed the entire features of the Gloster SUV. However, one can expect excellent exterior features like adaptive LED headlamps, LED DRLs, heated wing mirrors, a gesture-controlled tailgate, and a panoramic sunroof. The MG Gloster interiors could come equipped with 8-inch multi-info instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen info system, connected car technology, and front seats with heating, ventilation, and massage functions. One can also expect a lot of personifications options, as well.
The MG Gloster comes with a 224hp 2L turbo-petrol engine in its global versions. This engine pairs with a 6-speed manual or auto transmission option. There could be changes to the Indian model because of different traffic and driving conditions here. MG plans to introduce its in-house developed 2L twin turbo-diesel engine capable of delivering a power output of 218hp and torque of 480Nm. The engine could be the same that was displayed at the Guangzhou Motor Show. Derived from Fiat’s Multijet II, this engine powers the MG Hector, as well.
The vehicle will be assembled at MG Motors’ Halol plant with the company planning to limit local content for a few components. The car will be launched sometime before Diwali 2020 at a price of around Rs 45 lakhs. As on date, there do not appear to be any direct rival. Maybe, it could be equal to an upgrade to the Ford Endeavour and the Toyota Fortuner. MG Hector has proved to be a runaway success in the mid-size SUV segment. The MG Gloster could dominate the premium SUV space, it seems.
