We all remember Burt Munro very fondly. How is it possible to forget someone who at the age of 68 took his 1920 Indian Scout to the Mecca of speed - the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah - and set an under-1,000cc world record that still stands today!
Well, the motorcyclists around the world are gearing up again to participate in the most prestigious event in terms of speed and join Munro in the history books. The six day Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials that lets racers set records in different categories ranging from 50cc to 3,000cc will be held this August 23-28.
This year, all the eyes will be set on the Castrol Rocket which is backed by Castrol and Triumph and will be ridden by former Daytona 200 winner, Jason DiSalvo. Disalvo will try to smash the current record of 376.363 miles per hour set in 2010 by rider Rocky Robinson.
“The Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials, also known as the AMA Land Speed Grand Championships, is one of the most unique competition events that we sanction,” said AMA Track Racing Manager, Ken Saillant. “Land-speed racing, and this event in particular, attracts an incredible diversity of motorcycles and racers. Every year the competition gets even more fierce, and we expect 2014 to be one of the most challenging ever. The outright land-speed record is one of motorcycle competition’s great triumphs. It is an enormous undertaking to compete for titles that push the frontiers of human achievement, and the investment, practice and teamwork that goes into just a few seconds of time at speed on the track is both mind-boggling and awe-inspiring,” he added.
