The only Cabriolet that Audi sells in India is the entry level Audi A3 Cabriolet. Apart from it, Audi doesn't sell any other Cabriolet in the country, including the A5 and S5 Cabriolets. In fact, the Audi A5 is also not available in the even in the regular saloon form. Nevertheless, Audi has given a mile makeover the MY 2017 A5 and S5 Cabriolets and revealed them recently.
There's no big surprise as far as design and mechanicals are concerned and only a few features have been added to the A5 and S5 Cabriolets. With the reveal, Audi has completed its A5 lineup, which includes the A5 coupe, A5 Sportback and now the A5 Cabriolet. Both the models share its design from the earlier updated A5 and S5 Coupe models.
The Europe spec A5 will be available with five engine options - Three TDI engine and two TFSI engines. The maximum output of the TDI engine will be 286 horses produced from a 3.0-litre diesel motor, while the petrol motor can churn out 252 horses. Three transmission options will be available to choose from - a seven speed S-Tronic dual clutch unit, a six-speed manual gearbox and an eight-speed automatic unit.
As for the US spec model, the Cabriolet version will get the engine options same as the A5 coupe. There will be a 2.0-litre turbocharged four cylinder engine producing 252 hp of power and will replace the 220 hp model. While an eight-speed automatic is definite, it's not sure whether Audi will provide a six-speed manual gearbox in the U.S market. Also, a front wheel drive model is a possibility.
As for the powerful S5 Cabriolet, the model will get a new 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 motor as the two-door coupe model. The unit will produce 354 hp of power, which is a good 21 hp more than the previous V6 unit. Despite the tweak in power, 0-100 kmph is achieved in 5.1 seconds like the previous model. An eight-speed auto and a standard Quattro all-wheel drive will push the car to an electronically limited 250 kmph top speed.
The A5 Cabriolet will be available with the latest driver assistance systems, including its navigation-linked adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance assist. A seven-inch display, seat belt microphones, Audi's Virtual Cockpit infotainment and gauge package, and a head-up display are available in the updated Audi A5 Cabrio.
The A5 Cabriolet loses 40 kg of weight, thanks to the omission of the solid roof with a convertible one. The soft top takes 15 seconds to open and 18 seconds to close and can be operated at a speed as high as 50 kmph. The soft top is designed to have more insulation to cancel out road noise.
The new A5 and S5 Cabriolet from Audi will go on sale in Europe in early 2017, with a US rollout shortly after. Both the cars will not be on display at the 2016 LA Auto Show which is just over a week away. We are not expecting Audi to launch either of the vehicles in the domestic market for now.
