BMW, the mighty German luxury automajor, has revealed the new 2 Series Convertible online. This is the third model in the company‘s 2 Series line-up and comes to market as a direct replacement for the 1 Series Convertible. The new model is much bigger, larger and powerful than the preceding model. It would be offered with a choice of four engines, including a new 2.0L diesel for the 220d and, for the first time in a BMW convertible, an M Performance variant, the M235i.

The BMW 2 Series Convertible is longer by 72mm and wider by 26mm than the model it replaces. Furthermore, it's wheelbase and boot space which have been elongated by 30mm and 30 litres, respectively. The electrically operated folding soft top lowers or raises in just 20 seconds at the touch of a button, and can be carried out at speeds of just over 48kmph. As for the safety of the occupants, the 2 Series Convertible comes with front airbags, side airbags with head airbags integrated into the seat backrests, seatbelt pre-tensioners and force limiters in the front seats and ISOFIX child-seat attachment points in the rear. Also, there is a Tyre Pressure Monitoring system which registers any loss of pressure and activates a signal in the instrument cluster to warn the driver.

New 2 Series Convertible is the first BMW car to have a new Professional navigation system which updates navigation data free and wirelessly through the built-in SIM card. This is capable of supporting the LTE (Long Term Evolution) wireless standard, which is up to five times faster than 3G. In addition, the four-seat car, with folding rear bench, also boasts Bluetooth hands-free telephone connectivity with audio streaming and a USB interface, a DAB tuner, BMW Emergency Call and BMW TeleServices as standard.

As told earlier, BMW 2 Series Convertible is available with a total of four engine options: a new 2.0L diesel engine, an M Performance powertrain, and two 2.0L petrol engines. All the aforesaid motors are more powerful than the engines in the previous model. The new 2.0L diesel engine develops 14bhp (190bhp) and 50Nm (400Nm) of torque more than the previous unit, with fuel efficiency of 25.5kmpl, while paired with the six-speed manual transmission. On the other hand, the M Performance 3.0L, 6-cylinder engine in the M235i develops 326bhp of top power and 450Nm of peak torque, while accelerating from 0-100kmph in a sub 5-second time. The 2.0L petrol motor delivers power outputs of 184bhp and 245bhp, while generating torque figures of 270Nm and 350Nm, respectively.

The performance-oriented M variant is distinguished by the regular variants by adding features such as 18-inch double-spoke alloy wheels, Ferric Grey air blades and mirror caps, dual-zone air conditioning, Dakota leather upholstery, Extended Lighting and Storage, M Sport suspension and braking, an M rear spoiler and unique M logos on the wings.
