With a strong response to its small car Kwid seen by the French automaker, Renault, is ready to take the challenge on to the market leader, Maruti Suzuki by taking off the covers of the 1-litre and automated Manual Transmission (AMT) variants of the model at the Auto Expo 2016. Renault Kwid has recorded more than 80,000 bookings and the brand is expecting its total sale to rise over 100,000 in 2016 with the launch of the new versions.
Gaurav Vangaal, senior analyst, light vehicles, forecasting, at IHS Automotive, said: "There is no doubt that this is the first time any company has posed a serious challenge to the market leader in its bread-and-butter segment. It is a good strategy to bring in another engine option and AMT. It will definitely help them shore up volumes."
Currently, Maruti Alto is a top selling passenger car in India, registering sales of 175,984 units between April and November 2015. With Maruti’s Alto K10 and K10 AMT, the 1-litre and the Automated Manual Transmission versions of Kwid will be a good competition. Renault Kwid packed with a 799 cc engine range between Rs 2.57 to Rs 4.01 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi), where as the Alto with a 796 cc and Alto K10 strapped to 998 cc engine range between Rs 2.52 lakh to Rs 3.53 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi).
