Mahindra has been on a launch spree with three all-new models launched in the country in the past few months. The company is said to be working on an all-new 2.0-litre diesel unit that will comply with the upcoming Bharat Stage VI emission norms. According to reports, the new oil burner will be introduced on the new-generation Mahindra Scorpio SUV, which is being developed under the codename, Z101.

The new diesel engine will ostensibly offer power in three tunes and the new-gen Mahindra Scorpio is expected to get the mid-spec 160 hp version of the oil burner. It is reported that the new diesel unit will weigh around 80 kg less than the 2.2-litre mHawk unit which powers the existing model. While the new engine will be more powerful than the current unit, it is also likely to generate more torque. As for the transmission, the six-speed manual unit will be carried over and Mahindra could also introduce an automatic gearbox to the line-up. Along with this, the new-gen Scorpio could get a four-wheel drive variant.

Sources close to the development reveal that the new Mahindra Scorpio will be developed at the Mahindra Research Valley, in Chennai, where the Marazzo MPV was also conceptualized and shaped. The platform underpinning the current model will be updated for the new-gen Scorpio. While its muscular semblance and butch looks will be retained, the SUV will sit much lower than its predecessor.

The new-gen Mahindra Scorpio is expected to be launched in the country sometime in 2020. As for pricing, with the new 2.0-litre, BS-VI compliant engine powering the model, the new Mahindra Scorpio price is likely to go up compared to the existing model that is priced up to Rs 16.37 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
