India’s leading car giant, Maruti Suzuki India is planning to add a new small SUV to its line-up this year to counter a slump in sales triggered by sluggish demand. In seven of the last nine months, Maruti Suzuki has witnessed a drop in sales. The new small Maruti car is expected to be priced under Rs 5 lakh. At this pricing, Maruti Suzuki S-Presso could turn out to be a game changer for the company in testing times when the entire industry is grappling on the sales front.
The S-Presso Crossover is based on the Future S concept which was revealed at the Auto Expo 2018. It is the first small car from Maruti that has been developed at the company’s Haryana based R&D unit in Rohtak with cues from Suzuki Motor, in Japan. Akin to Vitara Brezza, the upcoming Maruti S-Presso will be sold through Maruti’s Arena outlets.
Visually, the S-Presso gets a bold design reinforcing the cross-over like SUV looks. The ground clearance is expected to be high compared to other models in the entry-level segment. That said, the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso will squarely go against Renault Kwid in the budget space. Sources close to the development have revealed, the new small crossover is being developed under the codename Y1K.
As for Maruti S-Presso specifications, it will derive power from a 1-litre petrol engine supported by an AMT gearbox. Standard safety features are likely to include an anti-lock braking system, driver side and co-passenger airbags. In addition to these, the crossover will also come layered with a segment-first touchscreen with rear parking sensors/camera. Besides, it could also come with dual tone exterior colour option. The new entry-level small car is aimed at the first time buyer and is expected to give a new lease of life to the small car segment that has been losing its sheen over the years. Maruti Suzuki is also working on the all-new Celerio, being developed under the codename YNC. It is expected to launch in India sometime next year.
