The 10th generation Mercedes E-Class 2017 was revealed in Detroit on Sunday (10th January). The rival to the Audi A6, BMW 5 series, Jaguar XF and Volvo S90 is the last car from Merc’s line up to receive design changes. The design is much along the line of S Class and E Class, which is in line with Merc’s strategy to provide more cohesive appearance to all its cars.
Measuring at 115.6 inches, the wheelbase of the new car is 2.6 inches longer than the outgoing version and measures at and overall length has grown too by 1.7 inches making the car 193.8 inches long. While the car is 2mm narrower and sits 6mm lower than the old E Class. The new E Class boasts of much improved aerodynamic efficiency with drag coefficient of just 0.23.
The new E-Class will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with 241bhp and 370Nm of torque, more variants and models will be added while 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission powering the rear wheels will be available as standard.
The E-Class utilises high quality materials like natural grain ash wood and the redesigned cabin takes cues from the S and C Class. The car uses a wide (12.3 inches) next-generation high-resolution display for navigation. Touch-sensitive control buttons on the steering wheel provide a smartphone like interface that allow the user to control the infotainment system. A touchpad that can recognize handwriting and a voice control system can also be used to control the infotainment system and other features like air- conditioning and other assistance features.
The E-Class comes equipped with steel-spring suspension as standard that offer two direct control settings for selective dampening that can be used to tune the suspension for comfort or sport. In addition, an air body control suspension system will be available as option that’s can automatically control the ride height and other settings. Several other next generation assistance features like remote parking pilot, evasive steering assist, drive pilot, car-to-x communication will also make their way into the car.
