Czech automaker, Skoda has officially revealed the new-generation Scala hatchback. This model will replace the international-spec Rapid hatchback. For people not in the know, Skoda is selling the re-engineered VW Vento as Rapid sedan in India. In Skoda's global lineup, the Scala is the first Skoda to be based on Volkswagen Group's new MQB AO platform. This platform also underpins the VW T-Cross, new-gen VW Polo and the Virtus sedan. Skoda will also launch a compact SUV on this platform in 2019. Scala is a Latin word, which refers to 'ladder'. According to Skoda's boss, Bernhard Maier, Scala will represent Skoda's 'next step forward in the compact segment'.
With new Scala, Skoda debuts its new design language - called "more emotional" design philosophy. The hatchback shares design cues from the Vision RS concept, which was previewed at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. Design highlights include optional all-glass rear window instead of a traditional tailgate, and Skoda name at the rear instead of the logo. This is the move to create more brand awareness among buyers where Skoda is less known such as China.
The vehicle gets the all-new LED headlights and tail-lights, which comes with brand-typical crystalline features. The headlights are narrow and tapered; the razor-sharp designed tail lights with rear fog light shine in the brand-typical 'C' shape. The Scala is the first Škoda to offer dynamic rear indicators as an optional extra. The indicators are divided into individual LEDs. When the driver turns the indicators on, they flash outwards in a sweeping motion. Skoda is offering a wide range of wheels ranging from 15-inch and 16-inch steel wheels, and 16 to 18-inch alloy wheels.
The Skoda Scala hatchback comes with an all-new cabin, which has microfibre fabric for the seats and soft foam surfaces for the dashboard. It comes with freestanding touchscreen infotainment system, which can be paired with an optional 10.25-inch virtual cockpit display. The hatchback sits above 4 meter in length, measuring 4,362mm in length, 1,793mm in width and 1,471mm in height. The hatchback rides on a 2,649mm wheelbase, which translates into more cabin space. The hatchback offers impressive 467-litres of boot space. The boot also comes with an optional electrical tailgate opening and closing function.
The Skoda Scala hatchback will be available in 3 petrol and 1 diesel engine options - two 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrols that offers 99bhp and 115bhp, a 150bhp, 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol and a 115bhp, 1.6-litre dieesel. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Buyers can also opt for an optional sport chassis, which will reduce the ride height by 15mm. It also includes 4 user-adjustable driver modes for more responsive throttle and steering.
The Skoda Scala hatchback will be available in 3 trim levels - S, SE and SE L. The hatchback is equipped with several driver assist features like autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, rear-view camera and automatic park assist.
