Volkswagen has unveiled the all new Passat GTE Plug-in-hybrid at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. Passat GTE is first plug-in hybrid by Volkswagen in saloon and estate body style. It would go on sale in several international markets by the October 2015, with pre-orders commencing from June 2015. However, there is no certainty whether it would be launched in India or not; but even, if the company considers launching it in country, then it would come only in sedan version, thereby competing against the Toyota Camry Hybrid. The company also revealed the seventh iteration of the Passat saloon at this motor show event, which is scheduled to arrive in India by next year.

The Passat GTE, under the hood, carries a combination of turbocharged direct injection petrol engine (TSI) and an electric motor, which is supplied with energy from an externally (or in Charge mode) chargeable lithium-ion battery. Thanks to this battery, the Passat GTE can cover a distance of up to 50 kilometers in all-electric mode and thus with zero emissions. The 1.4-litre TSI engine develops a power of 154 bhp at 5,000 rpm; the electric motor produces 114 bhp. A contrast to the "E-Mode" (All-Electric Mode) is offered by the mode "GTE", which is also accessible at the press of a button – in this mode, the Passat delivers a maximum system output of 214 bhp.

A distance of over 1000 kilometers can be covered with a full 50-litre fuel tank and fully charged battery, which is also equivalent to the route from Paris to London and back without refuelling. The engine is mated to a six-gear dual clutch gearbox which is developed especially for the hybrid drive and it transfers the power to the front wheels of the saloon. The Passat GTE accelerates to 100 kmph from standstill in less than 8.0 seconds and achieves a top speed of more than 219 kmph; in "E-Mode," 129 kmph. Being the flagship vehicle of Volkswagen, the Passat GTE would boast features like LED headlights, Driver Alert System, Automatic Post-Collision Braking system, Front Assist including City Emergency Braking function, rain sensor and ParkPilot. The new Passat GTE will be launched with the high resolution 6.5-inch display of the standard "Composition Media" infotainment system.
