New VW Polo 1.5 TDI coming with DSG transmission

Snapshot: Volkswagen will introduce new Polo with 1.5-litre TDI engine mated to 6-speed DSG transmission

A few days back we reported that the Volkswagen (VW) Polo facelift will be introduced with a new 1.5-litre TDI engine and now it has emerged that the new powertrain will also be available with VW’s popular Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). Presently, the DSG is available only with petrol powered Polo GT TSI and Vento GT TSI and the new model will be Volkswagen's first diesel hatchback with automatic transmission in India. This could also be a segment first. The new powertrain is a downsized version of company's 1.6-litre engine that powers the Vento sedan and Polo GT TDI. To keep the manufacturing costs in check, the new unit will be assembled at VW's Chakan plant.

The major reason behind reducing the engine size is to avail excise benefits and to improve the performance of Polo by replacing its current 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder power plant. The new 4-cylinder engine will be tuned in 89 BHP and 104 BHP guises. While the former will power the stock versions of the Polo, the more powerful versions will be employed to do duty in the Polo GT TDI and Vento sedan.

Along with the new powertrain, the new Polo will also boast a host of features like reverse parking aid, GPS system, LED equipped headlights and power-foldable ORVMs (outer rear view mirrors). Other enhancements could include a full colour infotainment display with navigation and reverse camera. Rear entertainment systems may also be on offer. The new Polo is expected to reach the Volkswagen outlets by mid 2014.
