The Ford Ecosport is one of the best selling cars from American automobile company. Off late there has been some rumours floating around suggesting that the next generation model might come with an hybrid-electric engine. The current model of this car is equipped with a 1.5-litre Ti-VCT petrol and the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engines along with a 1.5-litre TDCi diesel engine variant.
The compact SUV was released back in mid 2013 after being showcased at the 2012 auto expo. Ever since its launch, the vehicle has played a crucial part in the growth of the company’s market share in emerging nations like India. The brand’s manufacturing plant in Chennai also produces large number of this vehicle for exports. Although the car has had a great run till near past, but its sales has started dwindling down since the launch of the Maruti Vitara Brezza. This launch has further heated up an already intense and competitive mini SUV market. To cope up with this loss, Ford has recently slashed its prices significantly and things does seem to have improved since then. Last month Ford managed to sell 4885 unit of EcoSport while the Vitara Brezza remained the highest selling utility vehicle in the country with 10,232 units being sold. The EcoSport received a minor facelift earlier this year with some minor upgrades.
If the rumours regarding its next-gen model’s hybrid-electric engine turns out to be true, then Ford will be getting benefits under the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of hybrid and Electric vehicles) scheme launched by the Central Government. This scheme has been started to promote eco friendly vehicles and offers incentives of up to Rs 29,000 on electric and hybrid cars.
