‘N’ is Hyundai’s performance designation
i20 N still under development
Will probably get 200bhp turbo-petrol
The upcoming Hyundai i20 is a new generation, and it has been spotted testing in many different places around the world. Development work has begun for the N variant as well.
‘N’ is the designation that Hyundai gives the performance variants of its cars, and there are clues as to this car’s ‘N’ intent. It looks like a current-gen i20 in the photos from the outside, but the wheels arches are squared off in a strange manner – a result of the increased length of the upcoming i20. There are the large wheels, large brake discs, and the dual-tip exhaust. The interior also gives the game away – there is an N-style manual gearshift lever inside.
The i20 N is expected to have a 1.6-litre direct injection turbocharged petrol engine generating 200bhp, which will pit it against the likes of the Ford Fiesta ST and even attempt to take on the VW Golf GTI. The new-gen i20 will make it to India sometime in 2020, replacing the Elite i20. We can expect more space, more power, more efficiency, and of course, it being a Hyundai, more features. It will compete against the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Honda Jazz and the Volkswagen Polo in the Indian market.
It is highly unlikely that the i20 N will make it to India except maybe as a limited-run import edition like the Volkswagen GTI, as a brand builder.
