Mahindra & Mahindra is gearing up for the launch of new XUV300 sub-4 meter SUV in the country. Scheduled to be launched in the first half of February 2019, the upcoming Mahindra XUV300 will challenge the likes of Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport and Maruti Vitara Brezza. Besides this, the homegrown automaker is working on an all-electric SUV based on the XUV300 compact SUV for the Indian market. It will be launched in the second half of 2020. Mahindra is also working on the next-generation models of its existing SUV range, which includes Thar, Bolero, Scorpio and XUV500.
The Mahindra Thar will be the first model to receive the next-generation model. In fact, testing of the SUV has already been commenced. The next-gen Thar has been spotted undergoing testing on the roads of Coimbatore, which is the common testing ground for most of the automakers. The new-spy images reveal that the next model will grow in size and will have new, wider front end.
The spy images are clear enough to confirm that it is the next-generation Mahindra Thar. The SUV retains the retro styling of the original SUV, but it comes with wider front end. The SUV's front design is inspired from Jeep CJ5, featuring a 7-slat grille flanked by circular headlamps and pre-production indicators integrated on the fenders. The windshield seems fixed and is wider than before. The spotted model was equipped with a fabric top, side steps and a side-hinged tail gate. However, the production-ready model could also come with fixed roof. This model gets some testing equipment mounted at the rear.
The next-generation Mahindra Thar will be based on an all-new platform, which will also underpin the next-generation Bolero. The new model will have better structural integrity and will be equipped with several safety features as standard. Dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, speed sensing door locks and seat-belt reminder will come as standard. With stronger platform and safety features, the next-gen Mahindra Thar is likely to meet the upcoming safety norms.
The next-generation Mahindra Thar lifestyle SUV will be powered by a newly developed turbocharged diesel engine, which will be compliant with BSVI emission norms. This engine will be coupled to a 4-wheel drive system with locking differentials. The spy images also suggest that the SUV comes with independent suspension setup at the front.
