Nissan India have selected the final six winners of the PlayStation GT Academy, concluding the first-ever edition of the unique series in the country. The top six players will now be flown to the Silverstone International Circuit in the UK to battle it out with the national winners from Thailand, Mexico, Australia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE.) The top six contestants from India are: Abhinaya Bikani, Prakash Nair, Akshay Gupta, Glen Ivan Sucheta, Karl Patel and Abhinaya Bhatt.
It was back at the 2014 Delhi Motor Show, where Nissan Indian announced the launch of the GT Academy in the country. For the uninitiated ones, the GT Academy is an unique platform that recognises racing talent and allows motorsport fans to prove their driving skills on a Sony PlayStation. Through the popular Gran Turismo racing simulator, gamers with the fastest lap times stand a chance to make a shift from the virtual world to the real world of motor racing.
Over 5,000 young racing fans took up the challenge across metro cities in India such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai out of which, only 28 participants made it to the final round that was held this weekend in Jaipur. At the event, 18 contestants out of 28 moved into the next round on the basis of fastest lap times achieved during time trials on the Silverstone International Circuit. Further six participants faced elimination out of the 18 after the Monaco street circuit.
The final 12 participants got behind the wheel of a Nissan Micra Active Petrol and competed on a short autocross circuit at the polo ground in Jaipur. Lastly, since the physical fitness is of utmost importance in motorsports, the 12 contestants were put through different challenges such as push-ups, endurance runs and high jumps to gauge their level of fitness.
A combination of all the skills were judged to pick out the final six contestants who will now be flown to the UK to train at the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit in Nissan GT-Rs, along with national winners from other countries. The ultimate winner among this elite group will secure a contract from Nissan to become their professional race car driver in the GT3 or Endurance championships.
