Official: BMW X7 SAV confirmed

Snapshot: BMW has officially confirmed to launch the X7 by 2017

After several speculations about the BMW X7, the company has officially confirmed the development of the X7. The BMW X7 will be assembled at company's Spartanburg Plant in South Carolina, US, alongside the other models of X range. The car will share its underpinnings with the X5, however, with a longer wheelbase and larger dimensions, the X7 will perfectly accommodate the third-row seat to be the company's first absolute seven-seater Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).

Although, further technical details are unexplained yet but the X7 is likely to get powered only with V6 and V8 engines in four wheel drive configuration, unlike the X5 which comes in rear wheel drive layout and with option of inline-4 cylinder engine, to accentuate the flagship SAV mark.

"With the BMW X7, we are developing another, larger X model, which we will produce at our U.S. plant for our world markets – once again underscoring our commitment to the U.S," said BMW boss Norbert Reithofer at the press event. The second model indicated here is the plug-in hybrid version of BMW X5.

The X7 will get onto the ground to compete directly against the Mercedes-Benz GL, similarly as X5 is positioned against the ML. In the next two years, BMW will invest 1 billion dollar to accommodate the assembly of company's flagship Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) at Spartanburg facility.

Production capacity of the Spartanburg plant will be increased to 4,50,000 units per year from 3,00,000 units now, while an additional workforce of 800 employees will be required to meet the raised demands. Interestingly, post the completion of plant expansion, the Spartanburg plant will become the company's largest facility across the world in terms of production.
