Volkswagen India has announced the official unveiling of Ameo compact sedan on February 2, 2016 in the country. The company recently announced the name of its first and much-awaited compact sedan. The German automaker had also released a teaser image of the Ameo sedan. Volkswagen Ameo would also make appearance at the 2016 Auto Expo, while the production would commence from mid 2016 at its Chakan production facility in Pune.
“We are following a long-term investment plan in India and with our latest investment we have reaffirmed our confidence in this growing automotive market,” Andreas Lauermann, president and managing director, Volkswagen India. Just so you know, Volkswagen India had announced an investment of 720 crores for the development of the Ameo compact sedan in November. It is part of company's 1500 crores investment, announced way back in 2014. The company, in an official statement, further revealed that it would continue to invest to increase the productivity and efficiency of its product lineup.
Basically, Volkswagen Ameo is a shorter wheelbase Polo with added boot. The compact sedan is expected to borrow several elements from the Polo hatch and it might not be the least priced vehicle in its segment. The Ameo is expected to carry several premium features. Mechanically, the sub 4-meter sedan would be introduced in both petrol and diesel fuel trims. The petrol variants are expected to be powered by the 1.2L MPI and TSI motors. It is also being learnt that the range-topping variant carrying the TSI petrol engine would be offered with a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission. The diesel variants would get their power from a Polo-sourced 1.5L motor. Volkswagen Ameo would lock horns with the likes of Maruti Swift DZire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest and Ford Figo Aspire.
