The journey of General Motors in India started a brand known as Opel. At a time when there were very few less offerings in the market, GM offered Opel Corsa and Astra in the market and both the cars carrying a higher price tag, could not survive the competition in India. The Corsa possessed one of the best ride quality and handling in its time but the Indian market which is more inclined towards efficient and cheaper cars. Recently, the brand new Opel cars were seen testing on Indian roads.
Caught on camera is the three-door version of the Opel Corsa in Bangalore, somewhere around Bangalore where GM have their technical center. The car carries MH 14 numbers with them, from the area where GM India’s Chevrolet plant is located. The vehicle caught during testing is powered by the same engine which also powers many other cars in the country and is jointly developed by GM India and Fiat together. The engine also do their duties on the Sail twins and the Enjoy MPV.
GM India, which is currently not doing very well in the market has furnished no plans to bring the Opel brand back in India. The vehicles which were caught during testing could be a part of fine tuning the current engine with Bosch.
The sales of Chevrolet, which is currently the only brand represented in India by GM has been dropping since last few years and even the new launches like Sail, U-VA and the Enjoy could not contain the crashing sales. GM is expected to bring new models to the upcoming Auto Expo 2014. The company is hoping big from the stage of Auto Expo. We hope that GM India brings something exciting to the Indian crowd.
Stay tuned as we bring more news about the same!
