It is for the first time that an electric formula car, made by students of Pakistan Navy Engineering College and National Student of Science and Technology has been selected for the SAE Lincoln 2016 contest in United State of America, that will be held from June 15 – 18. The head of the project, Abdul Aleem said it took two years for students of both the colleges to design the car and the car, developed by a team of PNEC-NUST students, was unveiled by Bank Alfalah.
And it is also for the first time that the students of Pakistan will participate in a science competition held in the U.S. Earlier, the students of the same universities participated in competitions held in Manila, Philippine and Cyprus, and also won the award for the Best Electrical Propulsion Power award in Cyprus Solar Car challenge back in 2014. Bank Alfalah, through its Rising Talent programme has provided a prestigious platform to nurture talent and provide exposure to aspiring young and dynamic professionals.
Sharing his delight on this major development, Atif Bajwa, President and CEO at Bank Alfalah, said, “Bank Alfalah Rising Talent programme is a platform where the youth get opportunities to transform ambitions into success, and contributes to the country’s socio-economic development. Today we reiterate that commitment by supporting some of the brightest minds in Pakistan’s technological landscape. Developing the country’s first Formula Electric Car and representing Pakistan as the finalists for the acclaimed FormulaSAE® Lincolncompetition from Asia are landmark achievements not only for NUST but for the country. ”
Engr. Salman Absar, Director Innovation & Commercialization at NUST said, “Being a first in a country with virtually no Formula Racing infrastructure, especially for electric vehicles, facilities or experience, the journey of making Pakistan’s first Formula Electric Racing Vehicle was far from easy. However, Bank Alfalah recognized the potential residing with these students, and came forward when no one else was willing. Even with the team’s relentless courage and acumen, this idea would not have materialized without the support of Bank Alfalah’s Rising Talent Programme,”
Abdul Aleem, team leader, FERN said, “Making Pakistan’s First Formula Electric Car was full of challenges but our determination led us to make it all possible and today we stand here proud to be Pakistanis. All of this could never have been possible without the support of Bank Alfalah and we are all grateful to the Bank from the bottom of our hearts. We are also extremely overjoyed to have been selected as the Bank Alfalah Rising Talent and by the grace of God we will bring another award home from Formula SAE® Lincoln.”
Talking about the electric racing car, the car runs on lithium ion polymer batteries that is capable to accelerate from 0 – 75kmph in just 4.8 seconds, thanks to the structure of the car that weighs 275kg and can reach a top speed of 100kmph. Some of the important features about this car is that it incorporates single piston custom made aluminium calliper braking system, a rack and pinion type steering system and an unequal A-arm suspension system with push rods along with SP-4 way dampers.
