Porsche India launched the Macan more than a year ago at a starting price of s 1 crore (ex-showroom, New Delhi), but how about a smaller and more affordable alternative? A new high-riding model is apparently in the works at Stuttgart if we were to believe a recent report issued by German magazine Auto Bild. They say the model has already received the green light for production and it will be ready before the end of the decade, with a previewing concept arriving in the next couple of years at a major international auto show.
There was a time when Porsche was using all their resources for the iconic 911, but now their range of models is much more diverse and this third crossover will likely generate some huge profits for the brand. Details about it are scarce at the moment, but we do know that aside from being smaller and cheaper, this new yet unnamed crossover will apparently adopts a more aggressive exterior design with a sleek profile highlighted by the dramatically raked roofline. Both three- and five-door versions are being considers, but most likely Porsche will decide to launch the five-door for added practicality.
It will be interesting to see which platform it will use taking into account it’s unlikely to adopt a proprietary architecture, so most likely it will have something in common with the Audi Q3. However, that one is front-wheel drive while the Porsche crossover is believed to use a rear-wheel drive arrangement as standard, with select version being offered with an AWD layout.
The Volkswagen Group is in dire need of funds to handle the dieselgate issue and they have announced some projects will be postponed or axed. This isn’t likely one of them since the smaller Porsche crossover is estimated to be a big hit in terms of sales for the Volkswagen Group and certainly they don’t want to pass on the occasion of making some nice profits.
