Red Bull wins One-Two in Malaysian GP as Ricciardo beats Verstappen

Snapshot: Daniel Ricciardo beats his team mate Max Verstappen as Red Bull wins top two places in the Malaysian GP.

In an unprecedented return of the Red Bull on the constructor’s table, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen handed the team top two spots at the Malaysian GP. The incident filled 2016 Formula 1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix saw an interesting turn of events as Daniel Ricciardo held off hard-charging team mate Max Verstappen and won the GP.

Long time leader Lewis Hamilton had to retire following an engine failure of his Mercedes F1 car. His team mate Nico Rosberg finished on the third spot in his Mercedes to extend his championship lead over Hamilton to 23 points. The win is special for Rosberg considering a 10-second penalty for a mid-race clash with Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, who finished fourth.

Williams’ Valtteri Bottas took a fifth spot ahead of Force India's Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg who finished sixth and eighth respectively. McLaren’s Fernando Alonso came from the back row to take a decent seventh between both the Force India cars. His team mate Jenson Button finished ninth in his 300th Grand Prix, while Jolyon Palmer took his first F1 point with the 10th spot finish for Renault, hence completing the top 10 of the Malaysian GP.

"It's been just over two years since my last victory, and it feels like a long two years - a lot has happened," Daniel Ricciardo said. "It was definitely a life-changing moment, the loss of Jules, a competitor and a friend. That was hard to take. I would have loved to have won sooner, and dedicated this a bit sooner.

"I just can't believe that there's eight Mercedes cars, and only my engines are the ones that have been going this year. Something just doesn't feel right, but there's nothing I can do about it," said furious Lewis Hamilton. "There's not really much to do - it is what it is, we'll just move forward and try to continue driving like I did this weekend. The guys did a fantastic job this weekend, and we did everything we could; I did everything I could."

The race began with high drama as Hamilton took an initial lead, but Sebastian Vettel made a huge mess on the Turn 1. He squeezed up to third ahead of Verstappen, with a minor contact with the Red Bull, causing a damage to his suspension and gave Rosberg a spin. Vettel was handed with a three-place grid drop for Japan for the collision.

With this win, Nico Rosberg is now leading the drivers' championship table with 23 points, ahead of his team mate Lewis Hamilton who sits at 265 points. With this win, Daniel Ricciardo increases his lead over Kimi Raikkonen and now sits on the third spot with 204 points. Mercedes is leading the constructors' table with 553 points while Red Bull is at the second spot ahead of Ferrari with a 46 point lead.
