Ever since the launch of Ford EcoSport, Renult has seen a constant decline in the sales of its flagship product Duster, and for the damage control, it is planning to launch new variants of the compact SUV and a couple of new products in the growing segments. The two segments which are growing at a great pace are compact MPV and entry level hatchback, where Renault India doesn't have any product yet. Speaking on the sidelines of Tokyo Motor Show, Renault showed its concern over the sales dip of Duster, and the need of new products in the market.
Speaking on the Duster's declining sales, Renault Chairman of Asia Pacific Region Gilles Normand said that, "Typically in India when you introduce a new model there is lot of enthusiasm. In our case, we had a higher level of sales and now stabilisation is happening at a very significant level. The segment is busy and the market is not very good, after the initial enthusiasm and we are stabilising."
Speaking on Renault's plans to overcome the damage, he said that the company will manage the life-cycle of Duster by launching variations of the urban SUV. So, we can expect an automatic and a 4x4 version of the Duster in 2014, which the company might also showcase at the upcoming Indian Auto Expo.
Speaking on the company's future line-up, he said that the company wishes to enter the significant or growing segments where they are not present yet. Specifying the segments the company is planning to enter are MUV and a sub Rs 4 lakh segment, which are two fast growing ones in the Indian market today. The company hasn't however disclosed the products it is planning to bring in, our sources tell us that Renault Lodgy could be Renault's entry to MPV segment. There are also rumours that Modus hatchback could make it to India, but we don't think that it will be easy for Renault to price Grand Modus at Sub Rs-4 lakh.
