The quirky and eccentric looking Renault KWID Concept that made its global debut at the 2014 Delhi Motor Show in February has been officially green-lighted for production. The road-ready version of the KWID Concept is expected to hit the streets of India by 2016 and is also slated to make its way into other emerging markets such as Russia. The production-ready avatar of the Concept will be presented at the 2016 Delhi Motor Show.
Dimensionally, the Renault KWID would measure sub-4 metre in length, so as to be able to reap the excise duty cut benefit and be able to rival the current market leader Ford EcoSport in the lucrative compact crossover segment. The Concept measures 3,500mm in length, and we expect the production version to to be definitely longer than that, but shorter than the Renault Captor - the smallest crossover in company’s portfolio at the moment. The compact SUV could also be offered with both a 4-door and 2-door configuration.
The KWID Concept was designed with inputs from company’s design studio in India as well as the global headquarters in France. It sports a very futuristic and perky off-road lifestyle SUV look with its large chunky wheels and deep treaded off-road tyres. Of course, we expect for the quirky styling of the Concept to be toned down and subdued on the production version to make it look more realistic. However, the French automaker has confirmed that the ‘KWID’ name would make it on the production model as well.
Under the hood, we expect to see the same 1.5-litre Dci, 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine that currently serves the Renault Duster in India. The said engine will be offered in two states of tune - 85PS and 110PS. A Renault Twingo-derived 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine could also be put on offer that will be able to churn out 70PS of max power and 135Nm of peak torque.
When launched in India, the KWID compact SUV will retail at a price lower than that of the Renault Duster and will directly rival the Ford EcoSport.
