The Renault-Nissan Alliance is one of the foremost collaboration in automobile industry, that leads the innovation scenario. They are already famous as the worldwide leader in the electric vehicles with a market share of 58 percent. But it's not like all their expertise is channeled for the hybrid/electric vehicles. Instead, they have recently revealed a prototype of a powerful 2-cylinder diesel engine, which is said to be the most lightweight engine ever.
The experimental engine is a 730cc, two-stroke, two-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged diesel mill that produces between 47 to 67 hp of power and 112 to 145 Nm of torque. However, the talking point about this engine is its weight, which is around 45 kg, less than the current 1.5 litre diesel engine of Renault, or for that matter, most of the diesel engines in the world. The design is said to be that from the engines of the cargo ship, miniaturized to fit in a small car.
Unfortunately, the engine of the future is not yet ready and is under work, in collaboration with 18 partners in Europe. The competition to manufacture an efficient powertrain is increasing day by day and so have Renault decided to work towards this. Not only Renault showcased this powerful diesel engine, they also unveiled several other projects.
Renault is also working of a hybrid diesel powertrain and a compact electric motor. Renault also showcased a more efficient bi-fuel gasoline and liquified petroleum gas engine.
