French car maker Renault is all set to knock the entry level segment's door next year in India. Renault will launch an all-new entry level car to compete with the likes of the Maruti Alto 800 and the Hyundai Eon. Codenamed- 'XBA’, the small car will be based on the Renault-Nissan automaking alliance’s CMF-A platform. The CMF platform is Renault-Nissan’s reply to the Volkswagen MQB platform, in terms of parts, production facility and platform sharing. The first car to be built on this CMF-A platform in India will be the Auto Expo showcased Datsun Redi-Go, which will be followed by the entry-level offering XBA.
A three pot 800 cc petrol engine is reportedly under development at the Renault-Nissan R&D center in Chennai, which is most likely to power both the upcoming CMF-A platform offerings- Redi-Go and the XBA. Besides the conventional manual 5-speed transmission, an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) could also be offered from the beginning. The car will be manufactured in Renault-Nissan's joint manufacturing facility at Oragadam, Chennai. Besides India, the small car will cater many other emerging markets across the globe.
