Mercedes-Benz has added yet another product to its long list of vehicles, this time around a more powerful and AWD version of the E-Class estate -  the E-Class All-Terrain. The E-Class All-Terrain is a rugged, stylish and all-wheel drive version of the E-Class and is analogous to Audi’s Allroad models and the all-new Volvo V90 Cross Country. Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain will make its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show 2016 and the first cars will arrive in the UK from mid 2017.

The design of the car is much like the regular E-Class Estate but can be differentiated by its SUV-style two-fin grille with the star integrated in the centre. The front bumper is new and is electroplated in silver-chrome contributing to the rugged appearance. There are new black wheel arch covers and a black side skirt with a chrome trip strip on the sides. On the back, there's a load sill protection and an under body guard electroplated in silver-chrome.

Inside the cabin of the new All-Terrain is an aluminium-carbon trim, stainless steel sports pedals and floor mats with All-Terrain lettering. The new model has the load compartment flexibility of the E-Class estate, as the rear seat cargo position and a standard 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat back. The rest of the cabin is inspired from the E-Class and receives exactly the same set of features.

“No E-Class has ever been as versatile as the All-Terrain. The new model combines a striking look in SUV style with the intelligent space concept of the estate. This is coupled with lots of innovative safety features and the multi-award-winning E-Class interior,” said Ola Källenius, Member of the Daimler management board responsible for Sales and Marketing of Mercedes Benz Cars. “With 4MATIC all-wheel drive as a standard feature and increased ground clearance thanks to the AIR BODY CONTROL multi-chamber air suspension, the All-Terrain is a flexible all-rounder – for unpaved roads, family and leisure time.”

The E-Class All-Terrain will get an E 220 d 4MATIC variant that is powered by a newly developed four-cylinder diesel engine producing 194 hp. Mercedes will also add a six-cylinder diesel engine a little later. Both the engines will be mated to the new 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission and will have the DYNAMIC SELECT as standard. An All-Terrain driving programme will offer settings for off-road driving.

What the All-Terrain driving programme essentially does is, it raises the chassis via the standard AIR BODY CONTROL upto 20 mm at a speed of 35 kmph. Accordingly, the ESP, active yaw control and acceleration skid control (ASR) are adjusted. Special indicator will display steering angle, the vehicle level (position; of the air suspension), the angle of slope and the angle of inclination, the accelerator/brake position and a compass.
