Rosberg inches closer to title with Austria GP win

Snapshot: Rosberg beats his Mercedes' teammate, Lewis Hamilton at an incident filled race and narrowed his championship points gap.

It was a perfect birthday gift for the German Nico Rosberg, who celebrated his 30th birthday with the win at the Austrian GP. Nico Rosberg won the consecutive Austrian GP at the Spielberg circuit and his third win this season. He beat his team-mate in Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton at an incident filled race and narrowed his championship points gap.

The race started with Lewis Hamilton at the pole position, which he couldn't hold for long and Nico Rosberg overtook him only to win the race with a comfortable 3.8 second gap. The Briton on the other hand, suffered a penalty of 5s and finished the race in the second spot ahead of Brazilian Felipe Massa, who in his Williams came third.

Four-time world champion and Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel finished fourth ahead of the Finnish Valtteri Bottas, who on the second Williams finished fifth. Force India's Nico Hulkenberg finished sixth after winning the Le Mans 24 Hours a week ago. Pastor Maldonado drove his Lotus to seventh ahead of Max Verstappen from Toro Rosso, Sergio Perez of Force India and Daniel Ricciardo, from Red Bull.

The race also saw a major collision between the two-time champion Fernando Alonso and one-time champion Kimi Raikkonen, calling the safety car on the track after the red-flagged was introduced. Luckily, both the drivers were safe and walked away. Hamilton now has 169 points and Rosberg 159 points. Mercedes is at 328 points while Ferrari on 192 on the constructors' table.
