Rosberg leads 2016 F1 season again with Singapore GP win

Snapshot: Nico Rosberg beats Daniel Ricciardo by 0.4 seconds to win the Singapore GP and lead the 2016 F1 season again.

The 2016 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix saw a thrilling last moment competition between Nico Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo. But to Ricciardo's dismay, he lost the race by a mere 0.4 second, leaving Nico Rosberg the champion of the GP. Not only this, Nico Rosberg also leads the 2016 F1 season now, regaining the lead over Lewis Hamilton.

Rosberg's team mate and reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton finished on the third spot. The drama filled race saw Kimi Raikkonen narrowly missing out on the podium for Ferrari. His team mate Sebastian Vettel though, got voted for Driver of the Day by fans, even after finishing fifth in the race. Max Verstappen finished sixth for Red Bull, ahead of McLaren's Fernando Alonso, Force India’s Sergio Perez, Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat and Renault’s Kevin Magnussen completing the top ten.

"I'm not going to stand here and be disappointed," Daniel Ricciardo said after losing the pole. "I am pretty happy - I did all I could. Obviously the strategy still didn't give us victory, but it was good fun to push to the last lap and know I was at least putting some pressure on, and giving the crowd some hope." He added, "If anything could have been more perfect it was the start, but even with an amazing start I don't think we would have got the jump [on polesitter Rosberg].

Ricciardo closed the gap down between him and Nico to 11.8s by lap 53 and pushed hard to avenge his Monaco defeat as Rosberg was to celebrate his landmark 200th Grand Prix with a 21st victory. He constantly keep closing the gap - Lap 56, and 5.2s; Lap 58, and 4.6s; Lap 60, and only 2.0s. But Rosberg held it together and crossed the line 0.4 seconds ahead of the Australian.

This is the eighth victory of the season for the German and puts him on 273 points, ahead of Hamilton’s 265. Vettel won the fan votes for climbing from last to the fifth spot.
