Rosberg snubs Vettel to win the inaugural F1 in Baku, Azerbaijan

Snapshot: With this win, Nico Rosberg has pushed Hamilton further away from the F1 championship lead.

Many of us might not know the name of a small country in Europe called Azerbaijan, but the country is pretty famous in the automotive circuit. And now, it has got another reason to cheer after hosting the successful inaugural F1 race in it's capital Baku's City Circuit called the Grand Prix of Europe. The recently concluded F1 race was won by Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg, who extended his dominance in the 2016 season and now lead the championship by 24 points.

Rosberg snubbed Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Force India’s Sergio Perez to win the inaugural race in Baku. An ecstatic Nico Rosberg told the media, "It felt really, really special and I’m very, very happy. It’s been an awesome result, first time here, y’know, I think it’s been a big success. The track is exciting, definitely, and a lot of overtaking also today I hear – I think, I’m not sure but I think so – so all in all good."

While Rosberg took an early lead in the race, it was the battle of the rest to finish the best. Vettel, who started fourth on the grid finished second ahead of Force India's Sergio Perez who finished third. Perez is on a run for the last couple of races, ending up with a podium slot. Ferrari's other driver, Kimi Raikkonen finished fourth ahead of Rosberg's team mate and two time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton started 10th on the grid and rose rose as high as fourth, before his ERS halted him due to a problem. It was only after several laps that Hamilton could rectify the problem, but it was too late till then. Valtteri Bottas of Williamsfinished sixth ahead of both the Red Bulls driven by Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen respectively. Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg and Williams’ Felipe Massa completed the top ten.

Nico Rosberg was down to 9 point lead after the defeat in Canada to his partner Lewis Hamilton. With Hamilton in fifth place and victory in hands at Baku, Rosberg now leads the championship with 141 points, 24 ahead of Hamilton’s 117. Sebastian Vettel is slowly closing on the reigning champion with 96 points.

At the constructors’ table, it's a clear margin for team Mercedes with 258 points ahead of Ferrari’s 177. Team Red Bull is in the third spot with 140 points.
