After multiple spyshots and rumours, Siddhartha Lal, Managing Director and CEO of Eicher Motors, in a conference call discussion with a leading news channel has finally confirmed that the Chennai based company is currently developing two new engine platforms, which should feature in the future Royal Enfield products. Mr. Lal further confirmed that the engines will be in the range of 250cc to 750cc and should be on sale by the early next year.
However, Royal Enfield has cleared that it will stick to its niche lifestyle positioning and the new engines will stay true to this idea. Furthermore, Mr. Lal said that the new engines will be better performing than the current engines but, they will not be very sporty or high revving. In a bid to target the global market Royal Enfield needs to have products that have a global appeal. These new engines will go a long way in doing the same for the company.
While the smaller of the two engines should definitely be a single cylinder thumper the bigger 750cc is definitely a parallel twin. Buoyed by a growth that is just not ready to show any signs of flattening, Royal Enfield is gunning for glory in the global market and there will be a INR 500 Crore investment this year with an aim to achieve global leadership in the mid-size motorcycle segment, which will be utilized for capacity expansion at their Oragadam plant, R&D, new product development and setting up technology development centres in Chennai and UK.
