BMW is ready to create a lot of ripples in the automobile market this year, and the results have started flowing in. The very first day of the new year and someone leaks the completely undisguised images of the sixth generation 2016 BMW 7-Series, revealing the exteriors and interiors of the BMW's flagship sedan. While the sedan doesn't look anything different from the previous generation model, a closer look will definitely reveal some of the sharper design elements, though integrated rather subtly.
The front of the 7-series integrates the BMW's trademark grille with the headlights, a design one have already seen in 3-series GT version. All the badges are removed and only 7-series is visible and the headlights spotted are the laser light headlamps from the BMW i8 Supercar. The car will definitely disappoint the buyers who were waiting for an elegant and gorgeous limousine like design.
As much as exteriors have been shot in detail, we have got hold on only a single interior image and we are disappointed with that shot. The interiors looked uncannily familiar to the previous generation or rather trademark BMW models. The dashboard consists of a large screen and has the same BMW's iDrive functionality. Though the equipment level is going to be more aggressive in this model, the luxury sedan fails to match the Mercedes-Benz S-Class interiors.
As for the powertrain, the new BMW 7-Series is expected to get the same set of engines, but with refined performance and lower emissions. The engines will be the a set of straight-six, V8 and V12 engines having options of a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The new platform is expected to be lighter by 200kg and the new generation will also get a plug-in hybrid variant.
Once launched, the 7-series will compete against the same Audi A8 and Mercedes S-Class. The BMW 7-Series will continue to fight it out with the Audi A8, Jaguar XJ and the segment leading S-Class. Though the official choice for many state heads as their leading vehicle, the new 7-series can lag behind the S-class with the S63 and S63 AMG versions.
