Scoop — Maruti Suzuki S-Cross caught testing

Snapshot: Company plans to launch compact SUV in India by March 2015, starting from around Rs 11 lakh.

Here is confirmation that Maruti is getting set to launch a compact SUV in India soon. We’ve just clicked some images of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki S-Cross driving around Gurgaon traffic near the Maruti plant. While Maruti Suzuki have used heavy camouflaging to hide the car’s identity, keen observers will make out that it is a Suzuki product from the design of the alloy wheels, which look very similar to the one’s on the Swift and Swift Dzire.

The car will make its Indian appearance in early 2015. While details are sketchy, in all likelihood the S-Cross will be powered by a 1.6-litre diesel engine, which will develop around 118bhp of power and 320Nm of torque. The car will also get a six-speed manual transmission. There is also a 1.6-litre petrol motor with 118bhp of power and 156Nm of torque but only a five-speed manual.

The car will get Suzuki’s latest 4x4 tech called Allgrip. This system is lighter than the permanent all-wheel drive that was seen on the earlier Grand Vitara. It is an on-demand system uses electronics to manage torque distribution to the rear axle using on-board computers. This will vary on conditions and the mode the four-wheel drive system is set to. According to Suzuki, this new system will help fuel efficiency as well as reduce CO2 emissions.

As you can see from the picture here the S-Cross has generous ground clearance (170mm in Europe) which means it will be adept at taking on off-road stuff. Also, at a length of 4,300mm, height of 1,575mm and width of 1,765mm it has generous dimensions which give it plenty of road presence and that should give it plenty of appeal among SUV buyers. The European version of the car gets a 5-star rating in the Euro NCAP safety tests, making it one of the safest cars in its class. While the European version comes loaded with safety kit like 7-airbags and ESP among other things, it seems unlikely that all those will make it into India.

While there is no official word from Maruti about the pricing we expect the car to start at around Rs 11-12 lakh, which will make it one of the better deals in the compact SUV segment. All in all, good days for Maruti loyalist are ahead.
