Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M), today launched its most anticipated, facelift version of the Scorpio. The price will start from Rs 7.98 lakh for the S2 base version and Rs 11.46 lakh for the top end S10 version (ex showroom, Mumbai). It will available in six trims namely, S2, S4, S6, S6+, S8 and S10. As of now, Scorpio AMT will be discontinued and an AWD version will follow later in few weeks.
The new Scorpio has an all new chassis and the exteriors are updated heavily along with more refreshed and feature rich interiors. The safety features are also hands on with the market requirement. The front now gets a more defined shape with daytime running lights on the front, taking some kind of eyebrow shape. The projector headlights and the black grill are also the visible changes on the front, while the rear gets new LED tail lamps with no visible changes to the side.
On the inside, a new hexagonal instrument cluster with a MID display and a 6 inch infotainment screen is added. The interiors now come in dual shade of beige and black to give the car more premium feel, taking inspiration from the XUV500. The power window switches have now been moved to the doors like more conventional cars from the central location. A chrome package can also be availed that adds chrome garnish to the grille and AC vents.
On the safety front, the Scorpio gets airbags, ABS, speed alert, seat belt reminder, auto door lock, digital immobilizer as well as panic brake indication. Also, features like micro hybrid technology (available on base & top-end trims), tire pressure monitoring system, rain and light sensors, follow me home headlamps, steering mounted controls with cruise control, automatic climate control, driver seat height adjustment, electric adjustable ORVMs, intellipark system, and voice assist system have been added.
The Scorpio will be powered by two engine options, one being m2DICR engine and other, the mHAWK. m2DICR engine will be a 4 cylinder, 2.5 liter, turbo charged CRDI engine producing 75 bhp @ 3200 rpm and 200 Nm of torque between 1400 – 2200 rpm. The mHawk engine continues to be a 2179 cc, 4-cylinder unit producing 120 bhp at 4000 rpm and 280 Nm of torque between 1800 – 2800 rpm. It is boosted by a variable geometry turbocharger with intercooler and features CRDI technology. m2DiCr engine will be available only on the base model S2 and rest all the versions will get the mHawk engine.
Mahindra Scorpio be competing against the Tata Safari, Renault Duster and other models in the same price range. Renault just added a 4*4 version to their line-up and Tata updated the Safari with the Storme badge. Scorpio was waiting for the updates for a very long time now. Been done that, Mahindra will be able to catch the lost market share with added features and refreshed looks.
