Though the smallest SUV from Skoda, the Skoda Kamiq will be unveiled in the concept form at the Auto Expo in 2020, spy images show the model testing on Indian roads for the first time. However, the photos seemed to be a European specific model. The vehicle could go on sale in 2021.
Skoda Kamiq is Skoda’s answer to the Hyundai Creta. It is built on the Volkswagen MQB A0 platform. However, the Indian version of the unnamed Skoda SUV will be based on the MQB A0 IN platform, specially designed for India.
Length-wise, the Skoda SUV will measure around 4.2 to 4.2m with an extended wheelbase as compared to the international version. It will help in freeing up space at the rear end.
The Indian model will get a more stylish design with liberal use of chrome, as compared to the Skoda Kamiq spotted testing in India.
The Skoda Kamiq interior will feature an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a panoramic sunroof, a five-seat cabin with reclining backrests to provide a higher degree of comfort to Indian drivers.
The Skoda Kamiq could come equipped with turbo-petrol engines. It might even offer a CNG option, but the diesel variant is undoubtedly not on the cards.
The Skoda Kamiq SUV will be the first offering of the Volkswagen Group India 2.0 plan, though Volkswagen plans to introduce its version of a midsize SUV soon.
There are two sedan models outlined on the MQB A0 IN platform, as well. One can expect the competition to heat up for the Skoda and VW SUVs because of the domination of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Moreover, the Maruti Suzuki-Toyota JV models could also flood the market by then.
