The recently launched Skoda Rapid Monte Carlo edition has been discontinued in the country for a very strange reason and is something hard which is really hard to believe. An order against the sales of the new sedan in the country has been passed by the local court in Punjab.

Previously, a Punjab-based apparel company, Monte Carlo, filed a case against the automaker for trademark infringement. Later in the case, the automaker was found guilty of violating the trademark of an apparel brand, which uses the same name ‘Monte Carlo’ for their products. Though this seems to be a funny reason for the discontinuation of a car in India, one cannot violate the country’s law.

Skoda India launched the Monte Carlo edition as an extension of the standard Rapid sedan. It was priced competitively with a starting price tag of Rs. 10.75 lakh (ex-showroom) and was expected to be a well-received model in the market.

The Indian-spec sedan comes with a red shade at the exterior and features a finely finished black interior. The sporty looking exterior features an all-black front grille, new headlamps, ORVMs and a blacked roof. It runs on new dual-tone 16-inch alloy wheels. The interior of the car features a faux-carbon finished dashboard with a touchscreen infotainment system and the latest accessories on them.

The special edition of the Skoda Rapid Monte Carlo comes with the options of both petrol and diesel variants. The petrol unit features a 1.6-litre motor that produces a maximum power output of 103 bhp and a peak torque of 153 Nm. On the other hand, the diesel variant offers a 1.5-litre engine, which churns out a maximum power output of 108 bhp against a peak torque of 250 Nm. Both the engines are mated to a standard 5-speed manual gearbox. However, the petrol variant offers an optional 6-speed automatic gearbox and the diesel one offers an optional 7-speed DSG gearbox.

The Skoda Rapid Monte Carlo sedan was here to give a stiff competition to the likes of Honda City, Volkswagen Vento, Maruti Ciaz and the new Hyundai Verna in the C-segment. But unfortunately, its days in the country are over.
