While we were waiting for Audi to roll out the A3 Sedan in India, the company has introduced the compact luxury saloon in South Africa, with deliveries starting from January 2014. The vehicle has been launched at a starting price of R323,500 (Around Rs 19 lakh). Audi is considering to launch this compact saloon in India as well to take on BMW 1-Series and Mercedes-Benz A Class, which are the most affordable products of their respective makers. However, the global rival Mercedes CLA Class will also be brought in India in 2014.
The South African market has received the A3 in three turbo petrol and one turbo diesel engine options. The petrol mill options offered with the car are 1.4-litre TFSI with two power output options 123bhp (MT) and 120bhp (AT) and a 1.8-litre capable of churning out a maximum power output of 177bhp and 250Nm of peak torque. The diesel version launched there has a 2.0-litre turbo diesel mill under the hood that produces 148bhp with 350Nm of torque. In India, we are expecting the A3 petrol version to be offered with a 1.4-litre TFSI 140PS and 1.8-litre TFSI 180PS. The diesel version on the other hand might have a 1.8-litre TDI and a 2.0-litre TDI powertrains.
The A3 sedan is based on Volkswagen's MQB platform on which the 2013 Skoda Octavia too is being built. The features that are expected to be offered with the compact luxury sedan are Audi's Drive Select system, a multi functional steering, two-zone climate control and few others.
Now when the A3 Sedan has entered the South African market, we are expecting the India-bound version to be unveiled at the upcoming 2014 Indian Auto Expo in February. The A3 sedan is basically the third addition to the popular A3 family that already has a hatchback and a Sportback. So, a compact sedan version of the A3 fills the gap between the A3 Sportback and the A4 sedan. What makes it a perfect car for India is the growing popularity both for compact sedans and luxury vehicles. So, if the company gets successful in pricing it spot-on, it's surely going to be a big hit here.
