Volkswagen is going to shake up its product portfolio for India, but one thing that will not change is its presence in the premium sedan segment. The Passat will remain in VW’s India portfolio as its flagship sedan despite the model – and the segment – not doing too well here.
The Volkswagen Passat Facelift has been spotted testing without camouflage. It gets a host of new features and looks different from the current model thanks to new styling elements. The styling has been updated with a new grille, new bumpers, and new lamps all around, with the headlamps getting the IQ Light LED Matrix lamps. The logos have also changed to reflect the new logo that is scheduled to debut on all new VWs from 2020 onward.
Inside, the 2020 Passat gets a MIB3 based touchscreen infotainment system with connected apps. The car will have internet connectivity through an eSIM as well. The instrument cluster will be an all-digital one, and the steering wheel itself will have a capacitive touch surface. The new Passat can also use select Samsung mobile phones as a smart key.
The new Passat will get only a single-engine and gearbox option for the Indian market – a 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine that will feed the front axle through a 7-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic gearbox. Power and torque for this engine are rated at 189 bhp and 320 Nm. Since it will launch after April 1, 2020, the engine will be BS-Vl compliant right from launch.
The 2020 Volkswagen Passat is expected to launch in the second quarter of 2020, and it will be priced around the Rs 30 lakh mark. It will compete with other premium sedans like the Toyota Camry, Skoda Superb, Audi A3, and Mercedes-Benz CLA, in addition to a number of SUVs available at that price point.
