While the auto manufacturers around the globe are moving swiftly ahead with new developments every now and then, Suzuki is still stuck with the same 1.3 litre diesel engine sourced from the Fiat, for long now. All the vehicles starting from the Swift to the Ciaz, are powered by the same DDiS engine. But it seems like Suzuki has finally woke up and they are in the advanced stage of developing 2 new diesel engines with 1500cc and 1600cc capacity.
Although the reports of the 800cc diesel engine have been making rounds for some time now, the latest news is that, they are also developing a 4 cylinder 1.5 litre and 1.6 litre diesel motor, based on the same 800cc engine only. The 1.5 litre engine will be made exclusively for the India and the 1.6 litre motor is meant for the European markets only. Next Gen Ertiga and Ciaz are supposed to be powered by the 1.5 litre motor, which are currently using the same 1.3 litre DDiS engine.
It is surprising though, to see Suzuki making a move towards the diesel engine so late. There was a time when the difference between the prices of the petrol and the diesel was more than enough to attract the buyers towards the diesel engine. But in the recent developments, the price difference has been reduced to Rs 10, more or less, and seeing at the premium prices that a diesel engine commands, it has become a tough call for the buyers to choose between the diesel and the petrol engine.
Still, Suzuki is hopeful of getting ample response once the indigenous diesel engine is offered. According to the officials, a diesel engine from the Suzuki stable will definitely help the Maruti Suzuki in Indian markets.
