Japanese carmaker Suzuki that sources Fiat's diesel engine for most of its cars including its top sellers Swift, Swift Dzire and Ertiga, is now working on an all-new diesel engine line-up to power several of its vehicles. A report published in Autocar India claims that the new engine family will power a range of vehicle including a small pick-up truck (codenamed as Y9T), a compact SUV, hatchbacks and sedans.
The new engine family will have diesel engines in different capacities including 800cc, 1.2-litre, 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre. While the 800cc diesel engine is likely to power the company's small cars and pick-up, other engines will be fitted under the company's existing and future hatches and saloons. There will also be a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel mill for the company's much anticipated compact SUV XA Alpha. This 1.5-litre motor will be a downsized version of the proposed 1.6-litre turbocharged diesel mill.
First to enter the market is the 800cc, two-cylinder diesel engine by early 2015, which will do its duty to the Y9T pick-up. The same engine might also power Suzuki's small cars but only after the company tests it potential under the LCV. The report's claim of introducing the new 1.5-litre diesel mill by 2016 might confuse people, since the compact SUV will be here in 2014, we expect Maruti Suzuki to use the 1.3-litre multijet diesel motor for the time being. The new compact SUV will be based on the XA Alpha concept which was first unveiled at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo. It will be the company's first mini SUV to compete against the likes of Ford EcoSport in the country.
There are also reports claiming Suzuki to develop an all new 1.1-litre, three-cylinder engine for its B segment hatchbacks, however, the company hasn't said anything yet on the same.
