The entry-level premium motorcycle segment has witnessed sudden surge in demand in the past few years. While Bajaj NS200 and TVS Apache RTR 200 4V dominate the segment, Yamaha too tasted success with its competitively priced models FZ25 and Fazer 250. Media reports are rife that Suzuki is also planning to launch a 250cc bike which is likely to go on sale sometime next year. There is yet no clarity if it will be introduced under a new nameplate or if it will carry over the Gixxer moniker. In most likelihood, the model could get the ‘Gixxer 250’ badge, though it is bit premature to confirm.
Akin to Yamaha, the Japanese bikemaker could launch the new 250cc bike in two versions-a naked and a sporty faired. In terms of power, the prowess could use the single-cylinder oil-cooled unit good for maximum power of 25hp. Transmission duties are expected to be handled by a six-speed transmission, tuned for better touring. At front, it could get the traditional telescopic forks while at the back, one can expect monoshock absorbers.
There could be a standard anti-lock-braking system as per the current mandate for safety in bikes. The Yamaha FZ25 rival will sport an aggressive design language, crafted for long touring comfort. On the feature front, expect the new 250cc bike to get an all-digital instrument, LED headlamps, turn signals, tail-lamps. In addition, there could be a sporty handle bar, a high range fuel tank, etc.
Suzuki is expected to price the model competitively in a bid to give it an edge over arch rival Yamaha FZ25. The Gixxer 250 is therefore estimated to be priced at around 1.40 lakh (ex-showroom), while its faired version, expected to be christened GSX250 could be priced little over at Rs 1.55 lakh (ex-showroom).
