Suzuki Motorcycle India Ltd. (SMIL) has expressed its desire to double its exports this financial year to over 20,000 units, and also plans to sell 500,000 units in domestic market. This sudden dream has surfaced after seeing the May sales figures and the units Suzuki sold in FY 14, and also the boom the scooter segment has been enjoying from sometime. Suzuki is betting heavily on its latest offering to the scooter segment - Let's - to take its annual sales figures to 500,000 units from 370,000 - the no. of units it sold in FY 14. In India, Suzuki is planning to increase its dealer base from 600 to 1,000 this FY.
Suzuki currently enjoys a market share of 8% in the scooter segment, and a 3% in the two-wheeler category. Last FY the no. of two-wheelers sold were 14 million out of which scooters sold were a little over than 4 million.
"We are looking at selling close to 100,000 units of the Let's in India. We would also consider exporting the product if there is demand from certain countries," said Kenji Hirozawa, Vice President, Strategic Planning, Sales & Marketing, SMIL.
"We are strong in the scooters segment at the moment. In the motorcycle segment, the bulk of the sales of 100-110 cc bikes comes from the rural areas, where we do not have significant presence at the moment. Hence, it is most important to expand dealer network," he further added.
