Being well known globally for its expertise in small cars, Suzuki has announced the launch of its premium hatchback Baleno in the UK. It produced in India and has been labelled as the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, where in 2015, the company manufactured 1.3 million cars from its two Indian facilities. The current share for the passenger vehicle market is a very impressive 48 per cent (April 2016).
First made its European debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2015, the Baleno is the first product to be developed on a new generation platform in Europe. It will be offered in two trims – the entry-level SZ-T and SZ5. The extensive use of High Tensile steel not only makes the structure lighter, but disperses collision force energy more efficiently and improves overall crash safety.
Talking about the standard features, the SZ-T model gets six airbags, 16-inch alloy wheels, HID headlights, air conditioning, satellite navigation, DAB Radio with USB and Bluetooth connectivity, rear privacy glass, cruise control with speed limiter and front electric windows. While the SZ5 model adds automatic climate control, rear electric windows, 4.2 inch central colour trip display, LED rear lights, Adaptive Cruise Control and Radar Brake Support.
Under the hood, the UK-spec Baleno hatch will be powered by a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder BoosterJet turbocharged petrol engine, capable to pump out 109bhp of peak power and 170Nm of torque. The engine will be connected to a 5-speed manual transmission or 6-speed automatic transmission. Offering the same level of power and torque of a much larger capacity normally aspirated engine (1.8-litre) it can bolt from 0 - 100kmph in 11.4 seconds on the manual transmission going down to 11 seconds where the automatic transmission is concerned. It is also available with 1.2-litre Dualjet with SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle System) which is claimed by the company to return a combined fuel efficiency of 70.6mpg.
