Maruti Suzuki introduced a premium alternative to its Ertiga MPV in India last year, with some cosmetic updates along with a six-seat layout as compared to the Ertiga’s seven-seat. Now the Japanese carmaker is working on launching a seven-seat version of the XL6 in Indonesia, dubbed as the XL7.
An undisguised mule of the XL7 has been spotted in a parking lot somewhere in Indonesia, which reveals an identical design to the Indian-spec XL6 MPV. However, the former sits on a new set of dual-tone alloy wheels and gets an ‘XL7’ badge on the tailgate.
Since the Maruti XL6 comes only with a six-seat configuration in India, it gets two captain seats in the second row. However, the XL7 will be equipped with a bench-style seat which will be able to seat three in the middle row. We expect the rest of the cabin of the XL7 to be similar to the XL6.
Powering the XL7 will be the same 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, that is also on offer with the Indonesian-spec Ertiga. The said engine puts out 105 hp of maximum power and 138 Nm peak torque.
While the Ertiga is positioned in the MPV segment in Indonesia, the XL7 will likely be retailed as an SUV, thanks to its high ground clearance and raised hood as compared to the car it is based on. The XL7 will compete against the likes of Mitsubishi Xpander Cross, Nissan Livina and the Honda BR-V in the Indonesian market.
Here in India, Maruti Suzuki has priced the XL6 MPV in India between Rs 9.8 lakh to Rs 11.47 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom). As of now, the car puts up against its own twin, the Ertiga, as well as the Mahindra Marazzo.
