Tata Motors has confirmed that it is working on two new SUVs, one a 5-seater and the other a 7-seater. Although there were no reports about the code names of the SUV, we can ascertain that they are the Tata Q501 and the Tata Q502, as both of these have been in the development phase for quite a long time now.
Both of these SUVs, the Tata Q501 and Q502 are built on the L550 platform, which is the same as the one in the Land Rover Discovery Sport. This is exactly the reason why the SUVs were tested on the road wearing the skin of the Discovery Sport.
However, Tata Motors will only be using the platform from the Discovery Sport and not anything else. For the mechanism, the company will be sourcing the power plants from FCA. In fact, there have been some reports in the past that the company has already placed orders for 70,000 engine units of the 2.0-litre MultiJet II engine. This engine is also used in the Jeep Compass, which was launched recently. The 5-seater Tata SUV will get the 140 bhp trim while the 7-seater will get the 170 bhp trim. The Fiat-sourced engine is currently produced at the company’s production facility in Ranjangaon.
There is still a long way before these Tata SUVs are launched. The expected launch will happen during the 2018-19 fiscal year. Once launched, the cars will take on the healthy competition that exists in the segment. The 5-seater will be taking on the popular Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster while the bigger 7-seater will lock horns with the Jeep Compass and the Toyota Fortuner.
Keeping in mind that most Tata cars are pocket-friendly, these SUVs may have a starting price of Rs. 12-13 lakhs and may go up to Rs. 17-18 lakhs.
