Tata Harrier was launched earlier this year in four grades with a new 2.0L diesel engine in the Indian market. The petrol variants were missing from the SUV line-up but if reports are to be believed, the Harrier might soon get an all-new petrol motor. Sources close to the development have revealed that Tata Motors is working on a 1.6L turbocharged engine with direct-injection technology, which is a first for the brand.

According to company officials, the turbocharged petrol engine is in the early stages of development and it will be tuned to deliver high power output ranging between 120 to 140 bhp. Keeping in mind the upcoming BSVI emission norms, the new unit will be tuned accordingly. The 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged engine has been used as a base for the development of the new petrol engine. Tata is expected to offer the new engine with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a torque converter automatic unit. While the new petrol turbocharged unit will debut on the Tata Harrier sometime by 2020, Tata could use the engine for Buzzard as well.

Currently, the Tata Harrier is offered with the robust 2.0-litre Multijet II diesel engine which carries the ‘Kryotec’ badge. For those not in the know, the 2.0-litre Multijet engine has been sourced from FCA. In terms of power, the oil burner makes 140 PS against 350 Nm torque. Benefitted by the eVGT technology, the diesel unit is supported by a six-speed manual gearbox. A six-speed torque converter sourced from Hyundai is also expected to be introduced at a later stage.

Launched in India this January, Tata Harrier is the only modern C-SUV from Tata, based on the OMEGA architecture, which is primarily a low-cost derivative of Land Rover D8 platform. Besides, Harrier is the first Tata car to sport its evolved IMPACT 2.0 design tenet. A seven-seat version of the model codenamed H7X is also underway. Tata recently unveiled the 7-seater model at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show under the Buzzard nameplate, which will be replaced at the time of launch. It is expected that Buzzard will take inspiration from its smaller sibling Harrier in visual terms. As for its launch, it could be rolled out during the festive season this year.
